V severním Thajsku každoročně místní obyvatelé své balóny štěstí vypouštějí ve svátek zvaný Loi Kratong, který se slaví při prvním úplňku v listopadu. V tuto noc vzdávají lidé díky bohyni vod - Mae Khongkha, po které byly pojmenovány řeky Ganga v Indii a Mekong v jihovýchodní Asii. Mae Khongkha se stará o to, aby měla pole dostatek vláhy a tím hojnou úrodu rýže i v příštím roce. Zaroveň se jí lidé omlouvají za znečišťování vody v řekách. Úctu k řece a vodě vyjadřují tím, že pouštějí po vodě květinové věnce kratongy se zapálenými svíčkami a vonnými tyčinkami. Společně s tím vypouštějí do nebe tisíce balónů štěstí s přáním, aby jim nebe seslalo déšt a aby byly řeky plné vody na zavlažování rýžových polí. Při vypouštění balónu štěstí si lidé zároveň přejí, aby se jim přání a sny proměnily ve skutečnost.
