While there are a few machine learning libraries out there, PyBrain aims to be a very easy-to-use modular library that can be used by entry-level students but still offers the flexibility and algorithms for state-of-the-art research. We are constantly working on more and faster algorithms, developing new environments and improving usability. What PyBrain can do PyBrain, as it's written-out name already suggests, contains algorithms for neural networks, for reinforcement learning (and the combination of the two), for unsupervised learning, and evolution. Since most of the current problems deal with continuous state and action spaces, function approximators (like neural networks) must be used to cope with the large dimensionality. Our library is built around neural networks in the kernel and all of the training methods accept a neural network as the to-be-trained instance. This makes PyBrain a powerful tool for real-life tasks.

Tropicana decided it would be a good idea to sell twelve different variations on orange juice. And yet, using strong blocks of visually distinct colors at the top of the boxes, they were able to clearly label and differentiate each product so that if you were a dedicated consumer of one particular flavor, you’d be able to identify it from halfway down a supermarket aisle. On the other hand, the now-rejected redesign plays down that color scheme to a completely dismissible level. The cartons look virtually identical, with any noticeable difference looking more like the result of having had its colors faded by sunlight than the result of a designer’s intention.

Text speak, rather than harming literacy, could have a positive effect on the way children interact with language. They found that the use of so-called "textisms" could be having a positive impact on reading development. "Children's use of textisms is not only positively associated with word reading ability, but it may be contributing to reading development ." The textisms were split into categories, including shortenings, contractions, acronyms, symbols and non-conventional spellings, and analysed for their use of language alongside more traditional schoolwork. "The alarm in the media is based on selected anecdotes but actually when we look for examples of text speak in essays we don't seem to find very many." Texting is likely to be an important part of a child's learning development, she thinks.
